Drivers who are looking for an efficient, affordable, and safe way to get to work will love the 2026 Honda HR-V. This subcompact SUV may be the smallest model in Honda's SUV lineup, but it has so much to offer in a great little package. With a base MSRP of $26,200, it is also affordable enough to buy as a first car for your young driver.[a] Honda has a reputation for making safe vehicles that are reliable and have a low cost of ownership, which is why the HR-V is ideal for so many drivers who want to get the most out of a subcompact SUV.

Honda introduced the HR-V for the 2016 model year. The 2026 HR-V is a mid-generation upgrade of this model, which entered its second generation in 2023. As such, you get more features like a larger standard infotainment touchscreen with more features, improving the connectivity and media aspects of the system. It also has three trim levels to choose from, allowing you to pick one that fits your price preference; these are the base LX, the mid-level Sport, and the top-tier EX-L.

Engine

Every 2026 Honda HR-V is equipped with a 2.0-liter I-4 gas engine that produces 158 hp and 138 lb-ft of torque. It has a dual overhead camshaft configuration and 16 valves for its four cylinders. It also has Honda's dual variable timing control to improve efficient performance; this will shut down some cylinders at lower speeds, reducing fuel consumption.

Transmission

Honda has paired the 2.0-liter I-4 engine on the 2026 HR-V with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Having a CVT instead of a conventional automatic transmission with set gears is designed to deliver a smoother and more efficient ride.

Drivetrain

You can opt between two drivetrains on the 2026 Honda HR-V. Choosing front-wheel drive will give you slightly better fuel efficiency while reducing the overall cost of the trim level you have chosen. If you opt for the available Real-Time AWD with Intelligent Control System, you will get better traction in your HR-V, especially in inclement weather.

Speed Stats

While the 2026 Honda HR-V won't win many races, its engine will give you enough acceleration to safely merge onto a busy highway, even during rush hour. This is one of the reasons why the HR-V makes a great option for commuters and other daily drivers. You can get from zero to sixty in about 9.4 seconds in the HR-V. Once you are on the highway, accelerating up to speed should not be a problem since the HR-V has a top speed of 115 mph. You won't likely ever need to drive that fast, but it is good to know that you have that capability in your vehicle.

Fuel Economy

If you are like most people who need to drive to work or school every day, you are concerned about fuel efficiency. Every time you need to fill up your car cuts into the money you earn during the week, or into your tight student budget. Fortunately, the HR-V will provide you with a very efficient way to get to your job or classes.

A 2026 Honda HR-V with front-wheel drive gets an estimated 28 MPG combined, with an impressive 32 MPG on the highway.[b] If you opt for available Real-Time AWD, these numbers will drop slightly, but are still very good, with an estimated 27 MPG combined, with 30 MPG on the highway.[b] This is not a bad tradeoff if you want the added traction of an all-wheel drivetrain.

Passenger Space

One reason why some drivers are reluctant to buy a subcompact SUV is that they are concerned they might feel cramped inside the vehicle. Many folks also worry that a subcompact SUV is too much of a compromise, having to swap between passenger space and cargo capacity. Fortunately, the 2026 Honda HR-V provides an impressive amount of space for both passengers and cargo without having to compromise on either.

The 2026 Honda HR-V has a surprisingly large passenger cabin. When you open the doors to the HR-V, you are greeted by 98.7 cu.ft. of passenger space. This is more than enough room for you and four other people to stretch out and enjoy the ride.

Honda has done an exceptional job of apportioning the space between the HR-V's two rows of seats. This is unlike many subcompact SUVs, which have a cramped back row. In the HR-V, while those seated in front get 39.4 inches of headroom and 41.9 inches of legroom, the three passengers in back will be able to stretch out with 38 inches of headroom and 37.7 inches of legroom. This is why the HR-V could work well for small families.

The interior itself is surprisingly comfortable. While the base LX has tasteful cloth upholstery, the Sport ups the ante with orange stitching. Still, if you want a little luxury in your HR-V, you can choose the EX-L for its leather-trimmed seats. Honda has placed plenty of beverage holders in the front and back for you and your passengers. In addition, the Sport and EX-L trims come with heated front seats, which will come in handy on cold morning drives. The steering wheel and shift knob on the Sport and EX-L are also leather-wrapped, improving your grip while using them.

Cargo Space

The 2026 Honda HR-V has a surprising amount of cargo space. The liftgate on this SUV opens up to a voluminous 24.4 cu.ft. of space. This is plenty of room for all of your packages on your next shopping trip, and enough space for your books and projects if you are heading to classes. If you need more space, you can easily fold down the rear row of seats, giving you an amazing 55.1 cu.ft. of space. This can come in handy if you are moving or need to bring some supplies home for a DIY project.

Technology

Driver Assistance

Honda has always been on the cutting edge of automotive technology, and that is certainly the case with the 2026 HR-V. In fact, the 2026 model is the most advanced when it comes to innovation. This is why the HR-V is an ideal vehicle to keep you safe, connected, and entertained, no matter where you are going.

Each 2026 model comes equipped with a full complement of airbags throughout its interior, which will shield you and your passengers in the event of a collision. However, the best way to stay safe is to avoid a collision altogether. This is why every HR-V has the latest advanced active driver assistance features, thanks to the Honda Sensing suite. These features help keep you and your passengers safe by detecting potential hazards and aiding in corrective actions.

If the system detects a potential collision with the vehicle in front of you, the Forward Collision Warning will sound, allowing you to take evasive action to avoid an accident. At the same time, the Collision Mitigation Braking System will activate, automatically working the vehicle's emergency brakes. This will help you avoid a collision or reduce the impact of one that is unavoidable.

The HR-V also has two other advanced safety systems that work in a similar fashion. Lane Departure Warning will sound an alert if you cross over into an adjacent lane. This can happen if you get distracted for a moment, like if you are looking down at the infotainment system. The Lane Keeping Assist System will then use slight steering adjustments to get you back into your lane.

Some of the standard Honda Sensing features will keep you safe in other ways. Adaptive Cruise Control with Low Speed Follow allows you to set a cruise control speed, and then the system will adjust if you hit traffic or encounter a slower-moving vehicle in front of you. You also get Traffic Sign Recognition, helping you stay aware of local speed limits. Finally, the HR-V has high beams that will come on automatically when you are driving in an area with low light, and then will turn off when the lighting improves or the system detects another motorist.

Connectivity

Honda has upgraded the infotainment system on the HR-V for the 2026 model year. Each model now comes with a nine-inch color touchscreen. In prior years, only the top EX-L trim had this feature. This larger screen will make it easier to operate the system, such as when using a map app to find your destination.

The 2026 HR-V also comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto at every trim level. This will allow you to link your phone so you can make hands-free calls and texts, even if you left your charging cables at home. In addition, every HR-V now has a wireless phone charger, so you and your passengers can keep your phones charged safely and easily while riding in your HR-V.

The HR-V's infotainment system is also designed for enjoyment. Once you have connected your phone, you can stream your favorite music over the vehicle's audio system. While the LX trim has a 180-watt audio system with four speakers, the Sport trim has a six-speaker system, improving sound quality. However, if you are really into music, then you are sure to enjoy the eight-speaker audio system on the EX-L trim.
